Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does Toomey Legal require appointments, or can I just walk in for legal services?

A: Generally speaking, Toomey Legal requires appointments for consultations or other legal services. While we try to accommodate those potential clients who walk in without an appointment, the hectic schedule of a busy law firm often prevents us from doing so. If you need legal assistance or would like to speak with an attorney, please call 617-350-0025. It is often possible to set an appointment for the same day under urgent circumstances.

Contingent Fee Arrangements

Q: Does Toomey Legal take cases on contingent fee agreements?

A: Toomey Legal will take some kinds of cases on a contingency arrangement, but typically the arrangement is a hybrid fee, with a reduced hourly fee and a lower contingent fee than would normally be charged. Some cases simply can't be pursued with a contingent fee arrangement, both for practical and ethical reasons. Your fee agreement with Toomey Legal will be given to you in writing if you become a client of the firm.

Documents and Supporting Materials

Q: I called Toomey Legal and set an appointment for a consultation. I have a lot of documents, emails, correspondence, contracts, etc. that support my case. Should I bring all of those materials with me to the consultation?

A: If you have supporting materials, you should bring them with you to a consultation so that the attorney you meet with will have the opportunity to review the materials with you and develop a better sense of the strength of your case. This is especially true in defense cases, non-compete cases and complex business matters where contracts, purchase and sales agreements, operating agreements and correspondence are particularly important. If you have a large amount of supporting materials, please call in advance to make arrangements to overnight or fax the materials in. This will allow the attorney you meet with the opportunity to review the materials in advance to save time at the consultation.

Free Consultation

Q: Does Toomey Legal offer a free consultation to potential clients?

A: Toomey Legal offers potential clients an initial telephone consultation at no charge. An available attorney will listen to your situation and ask you questions to determine whether we can assist you before entering a formal attorney-client relationship. Anything you discuss with the attorney during this conversation is strictly confidential, regardless of whether you retain our services.

Hours of Operation

Q: What are Toomey Legal's hours of operation?

A: Toomey Legal's "official" business hours are Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and we try to schedule all regular consultations, meetings and appointments during those hours. However, the realities of the legal world require us to work well beyond those hours each week. We also recognize that the realities of our clients' lives occasionally require flexibility in scheduling appointments, and we are happy to meet with clients after hours or on weekends when necessary to meet their needs.

Q: I called Toomey Legal and set an appointment for a consultation. I have witnesses willing to testify on my behalf. Should I bring them with me?

A: If you have witnesses to support your case, please notify the attorney you will be meeting with. In some cases, it may be important to bring witnesses with you to the consultation to sign affidavits or otherwise support your case. In other cases, it is more important for you to provide information yourself and more thoroughly develop your case before involving witnesses. The attorney you meet with will make that determination.
